There's a New Kid on the Block — And It's Saving Schools £5,000 a Year

Google Workspace SSO, Microsoft 365 sign-in, and live MIS sync from Arbor, SIMS, and Bromcom. Lumio just made every other school platform look expensive and outdated.

Schools Are Bleeding Money on Middleware

Here's a number nobody talks about: the average UK school spends between £3,000 and £8,000 per year on MIS middleware, data connectors, and integration tools — just to make their existing software talk to each other.

That's not a technology investment. That's a tax on bad architecture.

Your MIS doesn't talk to your safeguarding platform. Your safeguarding platform doesn't talk to your attendance system. Your attendance system definitely doesn't talk to your SEND provision tracker. So you buy Clever, ClassLink, Wonde, or GroupCall connectors to bridge the gaps. Each one costs money. Each one adds another vendor to manage. Each one introduces another point of failure.

And the worst part? Most of these middleware providers are US companies that don't understand Ofsted, don't support UK SEND requirements, and couldn't tell you what KCSIE stands for.

The Problem Is Structural

Legacy school MIS platforms — SIMS, Bromcom, even Arbor — were built as closed systems. They were designed to be the centre of your school's data universe, not one node in a connected ecosystem.

So when you need to connect a new safeguarding tool, or pull pupil data into your curriculum planning system, you're looking at expensive API integrations, middleware subscriptions, or (the most common approach) a member of staff manually exporting a CSV and re-importing it into another system every Monday morning.

That's 2–3 hours per week of skilled staff time spent on data entry that a machine should handle. Multiply that by 40 weeks and you're looking at 80–120 hours of lost productivity per year. Per school.

Lumio: Built-In, Not Bolted On

Lumio Schools takes a fundamentally different approach. Instead of building a platform and then charging you to connect it to everything else, we built the connections in from day one.

Google Workspace SSO — Your staff sign in with their existing Google accounts. No new passwords. No account provisioning. No IT tickets. If they can open Gmail, they can open Lumio.

Microsoft 365 SSO — Same story for Microsoft schools. Azure AD integration means staff are authenticated automatically. Lumio reads their role and permissions from your existing directory.

Live MIS Rostering — Pupil rolls, class lists, teaching groups, and staff roles sync automatically from Arbor, SIMS, and Bromcom. Not once a week via CSV export. Live. When a new pupil joins your school and appears in your MIS, they appear in Lumio. When a class group changes, Lumio reflects it.

OneRoster Certified — Lumio implements the OneRoster standard for education data exchange. This isn't a proprietary API that locks you in — it's an industry standard that means your data is portable and interoperable.

All of this is included. No per-school integration fee. No middleware subscription. No "premium connector" add-on that mysteriously appears in your renewal quote.

The Savings Are Real

Let's do the arithmetic.

MIS middleware subscription you can cancel: £3,000–£8,000/year saved. Staff hours recovered from manual data entry (2.5 hours/week × 40 weeks): 100 hours/year saved. IT support tickets for login issues, password resets, and access requests: drastically reduced.

For a typical primary school, that's £5,000+ back in the budget and the equivalent of three weeks of staff time recovered. For a secondary school or MAT, multiply accordingly.

UK-First Means UK-Only Problems Get Solved

Clever and ClassLink are fine products — for American schools. They understand state standards, US district structures, and American assessment frameworks.

They don't understand Key Stage 2 SATs results. They don't support EHCP evidence packs. They can't generate the attendance analysis that Ofsted expects. They've never heard of KCSIE 2025.

Lumio was built in the UK, for UK schools, by people who understand that "provision mapping" isn't an abstract concept — it's the document your SENCO needs ready before the inspector arrives.

Ofsted readiness, SEND compliance, safeguarding workflows, DfE census reporting — these aren't features we bolted on after the US launch. They're the foundation everything else is built on.

Try It This Week

Lumio Schools is free to trial. Bring your whole school online in a day — connect your Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, sync your MIS, and see your school's data in a platform that was actually built for how UK schools work.

No middleware. No middleware bill. No middleware excuses.

Just your school. Connected. Finally.
